Thailand is one of the most naturally diverse countries on the planet, with stunning wildlife from lush tropical jungles to beautiful coral reefs. With so many beautiful species, it makes sense that some will want to keep some as pets, and you will find numerous exotic pet shops in the country. However, it is important to find the right store for happy, healthy pets, so here’s a quick look at how to look for a good exotic pet store in Thailand.

Captive-Bred Exotic Pets are Best

One way to find a reputable exotic pet store in Thailand is to ensure they only sell captive-bred animals. Unfortunately, many stores profit from taking animals from the wild and selling them directly to customers. This approach is irresponsible in numerous ways, including:

  • Environmental Harm: Removing animals from their natural environment can have a long-lasting negative impact on the species population and the health of the wider environment.

  • Health: Animals caught in the wild are more exposed to diseases and parasites. Not only does this mean the animal in question may die, but they could also pass diseases on to other animals.

  • Adaptability to Captivity: Many wild animals are delicate psychologically and will suffer if held captive. Individuals born in captivity are more likely to thrive in such an environment.

  • Questionable Legality: While there are often no laws against taking wild animals as pets, that is not always the case, and some species are protected. For example, Thai tarantula species are protected in the country so you might get in trouble if you buy one from the wrong person.

  • Animal Welfare: Unfortunately, some animal traders see the animals as dollar signs rather than creatures with needs and feelings. When looking for an exotic pet store in Thailand, avoid those that keep their animals in poor conditions.

If you are considering buying an exotic species from a shop, you should ask to see the animals first. A reputable store should be happy to show you images or videos of their animals to show you they are kept in healthy and humane conditions. You should also ask about the shop's breeding programme to help identify those that sell wild-caught animals, and you should always check with the law before buying a specific species.

Another indicator of an exotic pet shop with good practices is that they have been operating for some time and has developed a good reputation. Those that sell wild-caught and potentially illegal animals will likely close before their reputation, and the law, catches up with them.
